CARDBOARD MASK

This was a very interesting task to complete, in which we had to create masks of characters or anything we wanted out of cardboard. i decided to try and make the mask in a more contemporary and simple style which is something i usually dont do. out of this lesson i aim to build a very effective mask of which i can experiment with the drawing style of the character. This project is also a great way to see your characters in a more 3D sense, this will further more help with your drawing, as it will help you see how the eyes, nose and moth form and fold. Its also a great opportunity to work in a 3D format, being a illustrator i do not usually get the opportunity to work with  3D medium.

This is the final mask i made using cardboard and some packing tape, i decided that i would try a different style of character due to the fact that the style i mostly draw in would be quite difficult to make in a 3D form, so i chose a more simpler and ultimately more effective character. I really like the mask, i tried to make the character seem old, and sad through the use of small narrow eyes, blank expression and the use of the brown packaging tape( this smooths out any of the cardboard lines and also adds some small wrinkles around the eyes which give it an older appearance, which is what i wanted.) I made the mask by making 2 large cardboard panels on the underside, then using hot glue and various cuts of cardboard built up the face, eyes, nose and mouth.

This task was a great way of experimenting with various ways of creative character and showing a bit of fun and whimsy. My aim of this lesson was to create a very effective character mask, which i feel i have completed quite well, to experiment with a different style of drawing and character designing, and to finally help this mask help me see the character in a 3D sense to help me draw and illustrate. Personally i feel this task has fulfilled all of these aims, i am really pleased with how the mask turned out, however i still have a while to go, i need to improve my skills with 3D models and in a sculptural form, i want to experiment with this again, and possibly look into it for my FMP in the final year.
