PREP FOR CHILDREN’S BOOK

As the title of this section states, this week we were asked to draw ourselves as toddlers and babies. Me personally this is something i really wanted to improve on, i never could quite get the proportions correct, it would always end up looking kind of funny. By the end of this lesson i hope to have built up enough knowledge of drawing toddlers, babies and children, and subject this into my own work and my own style. For this task it was really important to put these children drawing into our own style, this is to furthermore help us to identify the style we like, and how we can develop and change it, this is also something i aim to complete by the end.

To start this lesson off i first drew from my mind and intuition about what i would have looked like, focusing on a more semi realistic (being realistic in terms of proportion and style but using a different line quality which made it seem cartoony).

myself as a toddler, first set (failed attempt)

These were the first drawings i made from using my memory and a more of a realistic style. Ultimately i feel although the features of a child are there and it resembles a toddler, i feel it doesn’t really represent me or my style. I wasn’t truly happy with the outcome, so i decided to give it another go really thinking about the style i wasn’t to bring forward.

babies

These were the final group of drawings i created, and i absolutely loved drawing myself as a toddler in this style. I love the loose and more sketchy way the babies were drew, i feel the hair and features are a lot more softer and accurate to what my features were and babies features in general. Comparing both these set of drawings and my previous one i realise that i included way to much fine detail for the babies in places such as the nose and mouth, as babies have very rounded and softer features, and drawing them in this style really made me realise that this is the style is truly wasn’t to adapt and experiment with.

i really enjoyed this task and feel it has given me a lot of knowledge of which i can use in the future, after reading the hand outs and the words of advice from Jen i now have learned that a good rule of thumb for drawing children, in which the length of the body is roughly 3 head tall. I wanted to develop my work by applying this technique to some of children drawings in the future, to help the proportions and body aspect of them start to become as strong as the portrait, this is because usually i dont put any effort into the torso and legs, i either just draw the bust/ portrait or draw the body really weak which shows a very different level of effort. I feel i have succeeded my aims for this week where i develop my style and learned more about children proportions, this small task has given me many pathways of which i can go down and experiment with.

EXTRA WORK (DEVELOPMENT WORK)

To much of my regret this task to didn’t particularly help me with my children book, this is due to the fact that the child or toddler which has a small feature in the book doesn’t make an appearance in the children book, as it is all about the dandelion. Despite this, it has helped me in many other projects and many other pieces of work.

girl for puppet thing

This is a drawing that i have done for my animation, in which i used this drawing to create rigging so this drawing would have the ability to be animated. I used the technique of 3 heads length for the height of the child and character, you can tell by the head being large compared to the body, and the soft features that i used previous to draw myself as a toddler.

expressions development in own style

I also drew these which was also for animation, by drawing the main character for my short animation piece, i not only developed my style to fit a child rather than toddler or baby, but i also used the references from our emotions lessons. Where i used the drawings i made in that task to help with the emotions and drawing them here.

Over all i feel this task as a whole has been super beneficial, i has helped me in so many ways in developing my style and helping the drawings themselves be more accurate in terms of proportions. i loved this task and will keep further doing things like this to develop my style, a great way of developing these characters is drawing hands as i still am not great at doing that.
